Progress (February 2019)

We have combined GRACE satellite data with output from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) model to improve understanding of global terrestrial water storage stress. Consideration of the longer-term background natural variability allows us to better understand the significance of short-term trends seen in the 13 years of data provided by GRACE. Our new metric reveals a pattern of global water storage stress that is significantly different from previous assessments, with more than one-third of the human population reliant on river systems facing severe water storage stress. This work is currently being written up for submission.
